Handling parenting issues after the decree is issued

Parenting is just as important when couples are married as they are when they are divorced. In some situations, parenting the children of divorce takes on an added significance, since these kids need additional guidance to deal with the emotional aspects of a split. For instance, kids of parents who are divorcing may feel depressed, and believe that they have no one to speak to about how they are feeling. This can lead to destructive behavior and further distance from loved ones.

Even more troubling, many divorcing couples may feel as if their communication ends when the divorce becomes final. They may go their separate ways and not have the type of conversations necessary to be good co-parents. A recent interview of Jon Gosselin conducted by Oprah Winfrey is an example of how co-parents may struggle to keep a decent rapport in order to be there for their children.

In the interview, Gosselin explained that he and his ex wife Kate rarely speak to each other, except for occasional chat about their kids. He also revealed that they rarely cross paths and that she doesn’t know what goes on in his house when the children are with him. He admitted that he doesn’t know what goes on in her house either. He also hinted that the kids have developmental problems due to their experience on the TLC reality show “Jon and Kate Plus Eight.”

We find this story interesting because divorced parents do not have to be BFF’s after a divorce, but they must have enough of a rapport to be effective parents.
