Emotional issues related to child support payments

For a non-custodial parent, there may be many challenges to face, such as emotional pain over the outcome of a custody dispute or difficulty communicating with a child’s other parent. However, child support payments can be especially challenging for some non-custodial parents, particularly from an emotional standpoint. For example, stress and even depression or anger are not uncommon. Moreover, there are many reasons why parents who are required to pay child support may be upset or experience negative emotions, such as an inability to stay current on their child support obligations or frustration with the amount of money they need to pay.

It should come as no surprise that child support can cause negative emotions. After all, the consequences of falling behind can be very serious and may include arrest, among other issues. For some parents, losing a job can leave them unable to stay current on their payments and may also compound the negative emotions they are experiencing. However, certain options may be able to help, such as modifying a child support order or creating a payment plan to get caught up on back child support.

Overcoming these emotions can be hard, but it is important for non-custodial parents to work towards reducing negative emotions, if possible. By gaining a better understanding of options that are available and legal issues related to child support, some people are able to lessen the emotional impact of child support.
